Streaming giant, Neflix is taking the war to MultiChoice.
A new ad by the South African arm of the service takes a swipe at the process involved in installing DSTV, and how easy it is for customers to lose signal.
The advert shows a worker installing what is supposedly a Neflix bouquet, in reference to what the video subscription company does.
MultiChoice or DSTV isn’t mentioned in the advert but it’s obvious to people who know. The company lost about 100, 000 subscribers last year – it was attributed to the popularity of Netflix in the country.
In July 2018, Calvo Mawela, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice SA was quoted by Business Day saying Netflix has an unfair advantage, and need to be regulated.
Mawela called for the company to pay taxes in South Africa, and to be subjected to same regulations as a service provider.
“As a country we have national objectives… if I was to be very narrow, I would say [to Icasa]: treat us like Netflix, so we do not have to pay tax or comply with black economic empowerment regulations. I am saying bring the likes of Netflix in the same net. Netflix does not employ even one person in this country, it doesn’t pay tax, they do not have to do any local content.”
