Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association(GFA) Ibrahim Sani Daara has sued ace investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas for GHC20 million for defaming him through the public screening of the documentary titled “Number 12”.
According to Sani Daara the airing of the video has cast him as a corrupt, crooked, fraudulent and dishonest staff of the Ghana Football Association.
The Documentary focused on corruption in Ghana football which uncovered deep rot in the Ghana with over a hundred football officials including referees and match officials taking various amounts of monies as bribe to compromise their fairness in matches.
The expose has led to the world football governing body FIFA banning the GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi while government of Ghana takes steps to dissolve the GFA.
Lawyer for Ibrahim Sani Daara, Dr. Dominic Ayine, in an interview with Joy FM Friday stated that his outfit believes Anas Aremeyaw Anas is very much aware that the claims about the Communications Director are false, yet, went ahead to publish them.
Dr Dominic Ayine who’s also a former Deputy Attorney General noted that the suit very much focuses on the part of the video that alleged that Mr Sani Daara took a bribe in order to get a player invited in the Senior National team, Black Stars.
“If you watch the video which is less than four minutes, Sani Daara is depicted as having involved in a discussion relating to a call up of a player into the Black Stars. What our client said in that video was basically a piece of advise to the effect that the potential Black Stars players must do well to train and work hard and if the scouts and the coach think that he’s a proper person to be called into the Black Stars they’ll do so.
“But you find out that Tiger Eye operatives attempt to give him an envelope and then he says give it to this person, he points to the person he says they should give it to and then there’s a voice over that says that he collected the bribe in order to get someone called up to the Black Stars. From the video itself, you can tell that our client never requested for any bribe, you can also tell that he never accepted any bribe and yet the Tiger Eye video says that he accepted the bribe and said that it should be given to his colleague. And so that is the point of our focus.”
Lawyer Dr. Dominic Ayine said he did not engage lawyers of Anas before filing the suit.
