The numbers are in, and Kendrick Lamar is officially “the one.” Following its surprise release last Friday, K. Dot’s untitled unmastered. EP tops the Billboard 200 with first-week sales of 178,000 (142,000 pure sales), according to Billboard. The project was expected to move around 170,000 copies.

This is Kendrick’s second No. 1 album following last year’s To Pimp a Butterfly, his Grammy winning (and now platinum certified) opus that dominated the Billboard album chart with opening sales of 363,000. He missed out on his first No. 1 in 2012 when Taylor Swift’s Red outsold good kid, m.A.A.d city, which still moved an impressive 242,000 copies. Not the first time T. Swift has robbed K. Dot, eh?
Anyway, huge props to Kendrick and the whole TDE team for once again proving that good music does sell — even if it’s a bunch of unfinished but no less amazing leftovers released with zero promotion.
