Africa Fashion Week London (AFWL) 2015 was launched at a short ceremony at the African Regency Hotel in Accra over the weekend. AFWL is Europe’s largest catwalk event of African and African-inspired design.
It is a collaborative catwalk and exhibition, highlighting the industry’s established and emerged African designers in the UK and worldwide.
The annual event aims to celebrate the work of African and African inspired designers in the UK and worldwide. And, in doing this increase the visibility and awareness of designers by providing them with affordable global showcasing platform.
Model, Victoria Micheals is the brand ambassador for this year’s fashion week. She shared with the press her excitement about her new role: “I’m excited about my association with the AFWL Brand to help with its vision of putting African fashion brands on the world map; this is an idea that resonates with me, not just as a model but also as an entrepreneur. I have always been an ardent believer in creating a global stage for African designers, artists, innovations and ideas.”
The maiden edition of African Fashion Week in 2011 attracted almost 5,000 visitors over a period of two days whilst last year’s event at the London Olympia attracted some 8,000 visitors over two days. Organizers say they expect a lot more people to be a part of year’s edition.
